Steelhead fishing on the Pere Marquette was pretty good last week, if you could endure the cold arctic temps once again.  With the colder weather came dropping water levels and colder water temperatures.    The fishing was more like winter fishing then spring.   Steelhead started to fall back into more winter like pools and runs and preferred slower drifts and smaller more natural flies.   With the river starting to clear we are not seeing many new Spring fish, we will have to get some warmer rains to get them moving up the river.  You can find Steelhead scattered throughout the whole river system.   Flies last week  were mostly small clown eggs in more natural Oranges and Cheese, Grapefruit Nuke Eggs and White and Orange Estaz eggs worked well too.   With the river clearing up try smaller Nymphs ,especially if the sun is bright.  Stoneflies, Hares Ear’s and small Woolly Buggers can all work well in this situation.  Looks like a warmer week ahead the river is starting to get busy. please be courteous to other Anglers on the water and practice catch and release.
