Hope everyone enjoyed their Easter. Steelhead fishing on the Pere Marquette River is kind of with the same pattern as the weather right now, up and down. It’s looking more like the end of April instead of the beginning. The river needs rain in a bad way, the water levels are low. We saw some precipitation over the weekend but it was in the form of snow again. Winter keeps returning up here, like a cruel joke. Just when you think you can put the bootfoot waders away and the propane heater, we get hit with cold temps and snowflakes. This week looks like another cold one with snow in the forecast. Fishing has been good on the cloudy days and much harder on the brighter ones. There are Steelhead scattered though the whole river system just not a lot. All the guides are working hard for a few shots at fish. Look for the fishing to get better if Spring Rains appear. Right now it would be the recipe for much better fishing. For flies last week Stoneflies worked really well. Nuke Egg’s in more natural colors like Oregon Cheese and Cream Delight worked good too. Did a little Trout fishing with Streamers last week and had success on smaller more natural Leech and Baitfish imitation flies.
Pics from last week 3/24-3/28. Nick joined me for his annual Spring Steelhead trip, despite a lot of Anglers on the river we did really well. He brought in some great Steelhead and a coupe Brown Trout on Streamers too. (top) Brad mixed it up a bit stripping streamers for Trout and fishing a little for Steelhead. The day was a success despite the bright sun. He brought this great Brown Trout to hand on a Streamer and took this nice Steelhead too. Steve and Jim finished off the week. We saw a few clouds which made Steelheading a little easier. Here they are with some great fish.
