The Pacific Northwest

From the Pacific Northwest to the Midwest the Steelhead addiction Last week I had one of the coolest fishing adventures ever.  Ryan Ligman and I flew out to Oregon to join up with good friend Tom Larimer to Swing Flies for Steelhead.   Since I was a fly angler in my youth, I dreamed of hooking a Pacific Coast Steelhead on the swing.  For myself this is what I thought Steelhead fishing was , it was

The Pere Marquette Steelhead fished well last week when the water was dropping.  The river did fluctuate a bit through out the week though. Now the water seems to be in much better shape.  The lower you go in the system the faster the current and dirtier the water.    We mostly hooked Fall/Winter fish but did see a few fresh Spring fish show themselves.   The bite can still be on and off,

It’s about to get real messy on the Pere Marquette River.   With a good amount of snow on the ground.  Forecasted rain and warmer weather ahead this week, the river is going to come up.    Could be into or over the banks by the weekend.   This will all depend on the air temperatures day or night .    We sure have had some really weird weather patterns this winter.    I’m home today from doing a trip because everything is a

You will think I’m crazy, Winter is one of my favorite times of year to be living in Northern Michigan.   It’s the time of year where the wood stove  is always burning.    A hook is always in the Fly Tying vise and Football game is on for background noise.  The river finally gets to relax, less boats and people allow it to get to its more natural state.  Wildlife becomes more

Merry Christmas – Fishing Report 12.22.16

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !!!! The River locked up pretty good the end of last week and the beginning of this week.   The upper stretches had a lot of shelf ice and slush coming down it most days.  Middle to lower was the same in the slower spots and way down low is frozen.    The river is extremely clear and cold. With

The weather outside is frightful ,Steelhead are so delightful!!!! Something I was humming to myself over the weekend as we were feeling more like Abominable Snowmen then Anglers. It snowed and snowed and snowed. Winter hit the end of last week on the banks of the Pere Marquette River. From the looks of it, it’s  only getting to get worse.   On my way off the water yesterday I already saw

Right now you can’t wipe the smile off my face.  The Pere Marquette and other rivers finally received the water we needed.   The river came up and the Steelhead fishing became a little easier on all the rivers this week.  The water is great now with a nice stain allowing Steelhead to move up into the system and come out from hiding and sit in there normal lies.   Fish are

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!!!!   The Pere Marquette is still fishing slow for Steelhead. The River is still low.   Steelhead are moving a little now taking advantage of the little color in the water from the rain we saw Friday.  Looks like we’re going to see some wet weather this week so hopefully it will bring water levels up more and get some fishing pushing up. For now you

November has been a tough month for chasing Steelhead on the Pere Marquette River.  With unseasonable warm temperatures and lack of rain fishing  has been difficult.   Covering a lot of water for only a few hook ups is the game.   You have to work hard for your fish,  to me sometimes isn’t that bad of situation.  It will make you a better Fly Angler in the long run.   If it was easy
