PERE MARQUETTE RIVER FISHING REPORT:
Well, as most of you know, we are in a State of Emergency up here and throughout all of Michigan.  With significant amounts of rain last weekend and throughout the week, the Pere Marquette River has become dangerously high.  Due to the high water, I cancelled most of the week.  We called an audible a the end of the week and fished some clients for bass and pike on their club’s property.  That was a lot of fun and the fishing was rather good. With the above normal water temps, the Bass and Pike were very active.  On Monday as the water was on the rise, the Pere Marquette River was coming up fast.  The water was still in decent shape in the upper stretches and surprisingly clear.  The water temps on the river were warm for this time of the year, and the Steelhead and Trout fishing was really good.  It was almost as if those fish knew what was coming.  The Steelhead that had been in the system for a while knew it was time to feed and head back out.  As, the high-water drops will see if the deck was re-stacked and if we received another push of Steelhead.  I would imagine the water levels will start to drop slowly. We might have some more rain and storms tonigh night and into Saturday morning.  The level of the river will depend on what we see for rain tonight.  As far as fishing goes, wading is out of the question. You can stand on or near the banks, but the flows are fast.  If in a boat, I would use extreme caution if going out and be familiar with the stretch you are in.
This flooding is occurring all over the State now. The Northern Michigan rivers like the AuSable are really getting hit bad along with our tailwater rivers, the Muskegon and Big Manistee.  If you are at home and are thinking of doing some Fly-Fishing this summer for Trout or small-mouth Bass.  Help these guides out on these watersheds.  There are a bunch of guides who had seasons just beginning.  Now those guides are sitting on the beach because Mother Nature forgot to take her medication. Call a Fly-Shop or an Outfitter and book a Northern Michigan Hex trip or a summer Tailwater bass trip.
Heather and I hope everyone stays dry. Prayers to the families that are affected in these flood zones and all the evacuations taking place.  Will keep you posted early next week on the river levels. Right now it’s dangerous and things can go wrong in the blink of an eye. If you venture out there, please be safe.

FLY OF THE MONTH

HUB'S SIMPLE STONE

Spring on the Pere Marquette River is a great time for early season insect activity. One of the earliest insect hatches we see is the little black stonefly. Sometimes you’ll see these little flies sitting on the snow banks along the river early in the spring before the snow melts off. As the air temperature rises on Sunny days, you can see these little, dual-winged flies dropping their eggs on the water. If you’re lucky, you can even see trout rising to them. In their nymph stage, these little black stoneflies are a good food source for migratory steelhead and resident brown trout. You can fish this fly pattern under an indicator, bottom bounce it, or add a tungsten bead on a jig hook if you want to tight line.

I am Jeff Hubbard. I grew up in West Michigan with a real love for the outdoors. After guiding in Alaska for a few years, I returned to my favorite rivers and streams, here in Michigan. Among these, the Pere Marquette River is my favorite by far. I have spent many years next to this great river in the town of Baldwin and have a great love for this great natural scenic river. I became a professional guide in 1998, and fishing still remains a real passion to me.

I’m a licensed USFS Special Use Permit holder and State of Michigan Permit holder.  This allows me to fish the whole water shed of the Pere Marquette River.  I am fully insured and CPR Certified. I run Full and Half Day Trips, Instructional, walk and wade, or float trips.

Always feel free to drop me a note if you have any questions or ideas!  Thank you for stopping by!
