Tug of War Continues
Winter and Spring look to be having a tug of war up here. Last weekend Spring was in the air along the Pere Marquette River. The birds were singing, sun was shining and the fish seemed a little happier too. We even heard a few ( cheeseburger birds) in the tree tops. 😃 The river has dropped a little and cooled off a bit. Steelhead numbers are low however. We’re seeing a few fresh fish around but not a bunch yet. Mostly fall and winter fish in the system. For flies last week Egg flies in smaller size and more natural hues along with Stoneflies and Hex’s worked well. Swing bite was tough on the nicer sunny days and better on the cloudy ones. Bait fish patterns such as Sculpin and Gobies worked well.
Pics from last week 2/22-2/27. Top picture great Steelhead with a mouthful of streamer on the swing. Taken by Mike. Mike finished off the week the coldest couple days I’ve seen out there. Focus on Thursday was to swing flies and we’ll it payed off on more then one occasion. This giant PM buck was well worth it after a epic hit and battle the cold just went away. 😀 We had a great day. And Mike got to put his hands around a true trophy.
Bob and Tony joined me for there annual “Cabin Fever”trip we had a blast. The weather and the Steelhead and Trout bite were good on both Egg flies and Nymphs. I got to join my friend and guide Ed McCoy of Mangled Fly Guide Service www.mangledfly.com on the Big Manistee River. I found this big river bruiser. Matt good friend and skilled Musky Angler and fly tier www.adaptivefly.com. joined me for a great day despite the cold wind on the river. We found a few fish.
