The Pere Marquette River fished well last week and is in pretty good shape. The river is still low in the upper stretches but surprisingly has cooled off quite a bit in the last week. Trico’s are going strong in the morning along with Olive’s on the rainy days and few Ants are showing too. Hopper’s and assorted Terrestrial patterns are fishing well on the warmer days. Smaller buggers, streamers and nymphs are working on cooler and cloudier days. This week’s bite has been hit or miss with a cold front coming in on the beginning of the week, mornings really started to feel like fall up here. Wearing waders and topping it off with a fleece on the cooler mornings this week. Been asked about Salmon quite a bit on the river. I haven’t really seen many and honestly we’re going to need some rain to get them into the river. The water is very low and clear right now. I did hear there are several in Pere Marquette Lake right now, so it’s only a matter of time and a little weather to get them working up into the river system. For now, though I will be chasing Trout for an awhile. Hope everyone has a great weekend.
Some Trout pics form the week. Nick started off the week with a bang bringing this Steelhead to hand on a 5 weight. It was truly something we both will never forget. I had the privilege to take my sister Amy and her husband Paul on the river for their first Fly Fishing experience and they did great . With a little coaching they really picked it up quickly and unfortunately they both lost a trophy fish to excitement and a log jam. But I think they got the bug now and want to fish some more. Nelson with a great Trout taken on a Dry and the Echo 3 – 5 weight, one of my personal favorite rods.
