Here's what's happening in Northern Michigan

The Rodent has Spoken

Well, the giant rodent saw his shadow yesterday, so I guess we’re in for some more winter.  Which is funny, because I don’t really feel like Winter has even hit us. This week and the week over the Holidays were cold, snowy and nasty. But other than that, I will admit, it’s been kind of nice fishing a lot without chipping ice out of the guides!  The temps have been really cold up here this week – teens and even some single digits at night. This dropped the water temps on the Pere Marquette and did start building a little ice on the edges and some slush in the mornings.  I did manage to get out yesterday while there was a break in the weather.  The river was much lower than the week before, but still had a decent color to it. I swung flies and managed to get this nice Hen at my second pool. She hit it like a freight train! There was no messing around! Felt more like a fall fish grab, than a dead of winter grab.  I’m sure this is due to the warmer weather and warmer water temps this winter.  Looks like we might see a warmup again next week.
If you head out on the water, try smaller Leech and Baitfish patterns with some flash for those low winter light conditions.  For Egg Flies and Nymphs, Smaller Clown and Nuke Eggs in more natural colors and try some Hex, Stonefly and even Fry Imitations this time of year. Good Luck, tight lines.
