Cold Steel

The Wood Stove has been burning for three days now and the banks of the Pere Marquette River are covered with over a foot of snow.  Winter arrived last week and decided to stay, from advisory to warning, the white stuff kept piling up. The river is low, cold and clear now, Steelhead fishing was decent last week just searching for biters. This week so far has been tough with dropping water temps and water getting lower. Hopefully a melt and some rain will bump the level up.  Plenty of fish in the system but now it’s a matter of coaxing them to bite or just finding them in the right mood.  Swing bite is starting to get better as the water cools. Try Leech patterns like the Firecracker, Low-Water Leech or Luscious Leech for hard pulls and jolting grabs. For Indicator Fishing smaller Nuke Eggs in more natural tones along with Estaz Egg’s work well. Don’t forget to start to break out the Nymph box try Hare’s Ears, Sparrow’s and Stoneflies.  Hope everyone has a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
Pics from last week.  Bob gets his big buck that cracked a Firecracker Leech.  Joe with a great buck showing its winter colors on the swing.  Snow kept piling up, Steelheading weather.
